INTEGRATIVE NUTRITION SCIENCE
This is term 3 in both the Holistic Nutrition & Health Coach program and the Holistic Nutritionist program.
Your third term
Integrative Nutrition Science picks up where Fundamentals and Principles left off and takes you inside the body to examine how food and lifestyle influence cellular function and the connected body systems.
Complex science is taught through the questions that arise in client work. Decades of practitioner and teaching experience shape which details receive attention, how conflicting evidence is handled and where a textbook explanation often leaves part of the person out.
You move through immunity, biochemistry, digestion, detoxification, hormones, gene expression, blood sugar and mitochondrial energy. Each subject is studied on its own, then connected with the systems around it.
A glimpse inside the term
These eight areas show how nutrition influences physiology and cellular function. The full lessons develop the science, research literacy and practitioner reasoning needed to connect them.
Immunity is studied as a whole-body process influenced by gut health, nutrient status, stress, sleep and environmental exposure. Autoimmunity introduces why immune activation requires careful context, individualized support and clear professional limits.
Cell biology, enzymes, ATP, oxidative stress and glycation take nutrition below the level of food lists. Research literacy is developed with the science so students can examine health claims and understand what the evidence can support.
Digestive physiology is connected with the microbiome, gut barrier, motility and gut-brain communication. SIBO and dysbiosis show how similar digestive complaints can arise through different processes and require different questions.
Liver physiology, biotransformation, glutathione, methylation, sulphation, bile flow and elimination are examined together. Students learn why detoxification is continuous physiology and how nutrient status and elimination affect the way compounds are processed and removed.
The endocrine system is studied through cortisol, thyroid function, reproductive hormones and hormonal communication. Testing is introduced with its uses and limits, helping students connect results with symptoms, health history and the wider endocrine system.
DNA, SNPs, methylation and gene expression are studied through nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics. The emphasis stays on how genes influence response and how food, lifestyle and environment may affect gene expression without treating genetics as destiny.
Glucose regulation is followed through insulin, glucagon, insulin resistance and reactive hypoglycaemia. Continuous glucose monitors are considered as one source of information within a broader assessment of meals, stress, sleep, activity and symptoms.
ATP production, the Krebs cycle and the electron transport chain explain how cells make usable energy. Oxidative stress, fatigue physiology and metabolic adaptation connect cellular energy with the way low energy can appear in everyday life.
Science used for practitioner reasoning
Complex cases rarely stay inside one body system. A digestive complaint can sit next to immune changes, blood sugar instability, hormone shifts and fatigue.
Term 3 teaches you to follow the physiology, compare possible explanations and identify information that is still missing. You learn where nutrition and lifestyle support may be appropriate, when testing information requires caution and when referral belongs in the plan.
Trace a health concern through connected body systems and cellular processes.
Explain how nutrients participate in enzymes, signalling and energy production.
Examine research claims, testing information and the limits of the available evidence.
Recognize when a case requires referral or assessment beyond the Health Coach scope.
Terms 1 and 2 prepared you to connect nutrition information and assess its fit. Term 3 explains more of the physiology beneath those decisions. The learning becomes personal
Energy after meals, digestive changes, stress responses, hormone shifts and reactions to certain foods can be viewed through clearer physiology. You begin to see why one explanation may account for only part of an experience.
This depth of training can change how you interpret your own health choices. Professional scope keeps personal insight separate from diagnosis and turns curiosity into better questions.
Understanding the body more deeply changes the questions you ask about food, symptoms and health advice.
Principles teaches you to decide whether advice fits. Nutritional Science teaches you what may be happening beneath the response.

Integrative Nutritional Science is the third term in both diploma programs and is taken after Principles. Choose Tier 1 to become a Holistic Nutrition & Health Coach, or complete Tier 1 and Tier 2 together for the Certified Holistic Nutritionist diploma.
A 1,000-hour professional diploma for students who want comprehensive nutrition education, applied coaching skills and the ability to begin working with clients within the Health Coach scope of practice.
